Steven Spazuk creates ethereal paintings using fire and smoke Art / Painting

While most painters opt commonly used paints such as acrylics, oils, watercolours and pastels to create their stunning artworks, Canadian artist Steven Spazuk refines the art of painting with fire and smoke. For the past 16 years, this brilliant fire artist has been making impressive works of art using soot left behind from candle flames.

Spazuk specializes in a technique called fumage, where he uses soot combined with acrylics to create ethereal paintings. To create each masterpiece, he holds a candle next to a paper and further draws with the smoke. During this intricate style of painting, he often doesn’t know what exact images he is trying to make on a piece of paper. Instead, he follows the patterns and shapes found in the soot to guide his artwork.

Besides that, he even takes help of stencils, as well as, a reductive process similar to etching for scraping images into the soot with paintbrushes and feathers. His latest work, which was recently showcased at Boston’s Adelson Galleries, focuses on the images of birds.

The delicate patterns forming feathered creatures with some common objects will take you into the fantasy world. Through this bird-inspired series, the artist is trying to depict how human needs for more resources are impacting the lives of these beautiful creatures and other living beings around us.
